Patrick mor

According to the family lore, Patrick was born in 1804.

In 1801 Ireland had been absorbed into the United Kingdom.  Patrick, born in Ireland the year after the insurrection of 1803, entered the world as a citizen of the United Kingdom.  Where in Ireland, the names of his parents and grandparents, all are unknown to me.  His name may appear as either Flaherty or O'Flaherty, the times were unstable in Ireland.

Sometime before 1830 he married Rose Dunn.  That year, in Ireland Patrick oge was born.  It was a famine year.

In the 1880 census, Brooklyn, at 76 Patrick mor listed his occupation as paper maker, born in Ireland.  He is said to have lived to 80-years of age.

The time and passage of his arrival in the United States is unknown to me.  He may have traveled under the name of Flaherty or O'Flaherty; his departure may have been from Ireland, or England.

For some of the events in Ireland between 1804 and 1830 I quote Peter Berresford Ellis: "in the early nineteenth century alone, in 1800, 1807, 1817, 1821-1822, 1830-1834, and 1836 there had been famines due to colonial mismanagement." (Eyewitness, page 170)  The Great Hunger, the famous potato-famine of 1845-1848 happened during their lifetimes.

Rose and Patrick mor O'Flaherty had at least one son, Patrick oge, but they are linked also with a John O'Flaherty in Brooklyn whose is also possibly a son.  I will write more on Patrick oge (Patrick, junior) in another post.

For this post, I am concerned with locating Patrick mor O'Flaherty....

This post is dedicated to Leslie Linart.
